One of the liveliest squares in Amsterdam
Rembrandtsquare is one of the largest squares in Amsterdam if you are looking for a great ‘night on the town’. The square offers a large range of bars, restaurants and clubs. During the day, people meet on one of the terraces or on the field in the middle of the square. Because the square is close to the large shopping street and the famous canals, it offers the perfect place for a quick stop and some refreshments.
The name ‘Rembrandtsquare’ was given because of the large statue of the famous painter in the center of the square. In addition to the statue of Rembrandt van Rijn himself you will also find statues that portrays his famous painting the Night Watch. A lot of people take some memorable photo’s here. Because of the statues it looks like you are part of the tableau of this iconic painting.
Actually; these statues are our absolute favourites! Did you know that the statue of Rembrandt is the oldest in Amsterdam today? It is also the first statue of a painter in the city. An we know Rembrandt deserves it, for he painted so much of the city and the Amsterdam citizens in the Golden Age of Amsterdam.
But first and foremost: the Rembrandtsquare is a place to have a great party with different clubs as well as typical Amsterdam bars such as the ‘Bolle Jan,’ or ‘Jantjes Verjaardag’ (Jan is a very common name in the Netherlands, and here will call him fat Jan, and Jan his birthday).
Another square where you can enjoy a party is the Leidsesquare. This is about a 20 minute walk from the Rembrandtsquare. Are you more interested in the person Rembrandt? Then we suggest to visit the Rembrandt House museum. Culture and fun, what an ideal combination!
