About 30 years ago, Hendrikje Ivo, an antique dealer from Amstelveen, bought a small handbag from the year 1820.
She was just charmed by the object, without having a commercial idea behind it. Fascination changed into a real passion of collecting handbags. Helped by her husband Heinz and by her daughter Sigrid, Hendrikje collected more than 3000 bags during her lifetime.
At some moment, she decided to show part of the collection to the public in a museum setting. At first, the museum existed of two rooms in a villa in Amstelveen (Amstelveen is a suburb in the South of Amsterdam). Yet as the collection grew, the couple thought it would be nice to find a larger location, which would also be more central in Amsterdam. Since June 2007, the museum is located in an impressive patrician house at the Amsterdam most prestigious canal – Herengracht. The Museum of Bags & Purses has ever since been a beloved museum among locals and tourists alike.
An amazing and luxurious private museum focused on only Bags & Purses! The visitor feels like they are a part of the closed reception rooms of an important fashion designer in Paris. Visit this modernized, air-conditioned museum and see it for yourself! A real must, if you are interested in fashion or design.
The Museum of Bags & Purses is also a great location for hosting your event or for having a high tea. All the options for hosting your event can be found at the website of the Museum of Bags & Purses.
The museum is open daily, and it’s a great 20 minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station (or 15 minutes by tram). Make sure to buy your ticket online, to avoid possible queues.
Another museum located in a traditional canal house is Foam.
