This is the most recent museum at the famous Museumsquare in Amsterdam. Moco opened its doors just in 2016. This private museum is the first in the world with an exhibition about the controversial grafiti artist from Bristol: Banksy. The name ‘Moco’ stands for Modern Contemporary, which is the era in art history on display here. The aim of the museum is to let young people get into contact with famous artists like Warhol, Banksy, Lichtenstein and Basquiat.
The museum was founded by Lionel and Kim Logchies. They are the owners of a modern art gallery in the Amsterdam Spiegelkwartier (an area with a lot of galleries). They previously worked with a lot of famous artists like Koons, Hirst, and Haring. Because of their large personal network it is possible to show artworks that usually belong to private art collections.
With exhibitions from some of the world greatest like Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Salvador Dalí (whom’s work you can already see from the outside) is Moco definitely the newest eye-catcher of Amsterdam. This museum is also situated at the museum square in a wonderful villa named Alsberg. This mansion was designed by Eduard Cuypers in 1904, Eduard is a nephew of Pierre Cuypers, who is responsible for the design of the Rijksmuseum. So, besides of great pieces of art you will also see some beautiful architecture at the Museumsquare.
