Always wanted to know how the sea influenced Dutch culture and see what a VOC-ship (the Dutch East Indian Company) looks like from the inside? Then this is the place for you, as the National Maritime Museum aims to achieve exactly that. In an exhibition with a lot of interaction you will discover 500 years of maritime history. In 1656, the Dutch navy leadership ordered to build a large warehouse. This warehouse was used to store sails, ropes, guns, and munition. This gave the navy the opportunity to equip the ships as quickly as possible when war broke out. Since 1973, this navy stockroom has been the National Maritime Museum.
After a very big renovation the museum now welcomes everybody in their freshly refurnished home. The building has been fully restored and modernized. From the central hall with glass roof you can easily find your way to the exhibitions, attractions, the restaurant, museum shop and the terrace at the waterside.
