Events & Exhibitions Calendar May – What’s on in Amsterdam
Check out all events and exhibitions taking place in May. It is the month that the flowers are in bloom, the month in which the end of the Second World War is celebrated, museums show their finest exhibitions and there are many outdoor activities taking place again. To make it easy for you, we have made an overview of the events and exhibitions that take place in May that you cannot miss!
World press Photo – De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam (1 May)
The winning images from the world’s largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest begin their world tour in The Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. At the World Press Photo event 2018 you will see over 160 impressive press photos of 42 photographers from 22 countries. The Netherlands is well represented this year with photos of Carla Kogelman , Jasper Doest, and Kadir van Lohuizen. You will also see the winning productions in the Digital Storytelling Contest.

Amsterdam Spanish Film Festival (29 May – 3 June)
The ‘Amsterdam Spanish Film Festival’ is a unique film exhibition that gives the public the opportunity to discover a selection of cinema movies from Spain and Spanish-speaking Latin America. This film exhibition initiative enables people in Amsterdam and a wider audience to discover and work on a careful selection of films from Spain and Spanish speaking Latin America. During the 4th edition, the Amsterdam Spanish Film Festival will host around 25 feature films in six days, as well as live music, snacks, wines, Q & A ‘s and workshops. The festival takes place in Amsterdam, in Pathé Tuschinski, Pathé de Munt, Het Ketelhuis and -new this year- Cinecenter. The festival kicks off with the film El Presidente.
Amsterdam Art Fair (29 May – 3 June)
From May 2018, 40 of the best galleries in the Netherlands will move into this temporary location, renamed Kunsthal Koper for the occasion, to show the latest works by the most talked-about artists of the moment for 5 days. Between the growing number of exhibitions, Amsterdam Art Fair continues to lead the way and, like its first two editions, is the event for collectors and enthusiasts.
4 May – Happy Oyster Hour at Bridges
Restaurant Bridges is located in one of the most beautiful and luxurious hotels of Amsterdam. End your week in style with your friends and/or colleagues at Bridges BarBistro. Every first Friday of the month it is time for Het Oesteruutje (the Oysterhour) at Bridges! Cheers to the weekend with a nice glass of wine, beer or tasty cocktail and enjoy free oysters between 18:00 and 19:00.
5 May – Liberation Day festivals
The Netherlands celebrates liberation day on May 5th . We celebrate the end of German occupation and the liberation of the Dutch East Indies. We celebrate that we can opine, feel, believe and say what we want. On May 4th we remember the people who died for this freedom, on May 5th we honor the people who fought for this freedom. There are several festivals and events taking place on the 5th of May, below we picked out our favourites.
Het vrije westen
This free festival features live sets from upcoming and established Dutch acts, from singer-songwriters and rock bands to hip-hop and soul. Spread over a host of stages and with indoor and outdoor spaces to choose from, there’s really something for everyone. Jump up and down to the Netherlands’ biggest pop acts, or take the younger kids off to the Family Vrijheidsplein (Freedom Square).
Het Amsterdamse verbond
At the Amsterdam Verbond Liberation festival the nightlife of Amsterdam will unite with over 50 different DJs and celebrates togetherness and freedom! The 4 different stages are filled with good dance music. Sportpark de Eendracht is located in Amsterdam West, near Geuzeveld.
On Vrijland they celebrate freedom for all everyone with thousands of like-minded people at Blijburg aan Zee in Amsterdam. Dance, celebrate and enjoy that you can do what you want, without damaging the freedom of others. On May 5th everyone is free!
The Children’s Liberation Festival is held in the Vondelpark Open Air Theater and is the only liberation festival in the area that is organized especially for children.
Music on Festival
On May 5th and 6th, the Music on festival 2018 will be held at the Havenpark in Amsterdam! This will be the second edition of the festival, and since last year was so successful the organization decided to make it a two day festival. With a nice line-up including Marco Carola, Benny Rodrigues and Apollonia you can make sure this is going to be a good one! The festival starts at 11:00 AM and continues until 23:00 hrs and is from 18+.
6 & 27 May- Pure Markt
At the Pure Market you will find pure products, sold by the producers themselves. Let them inform you about the ingredients, origin and the production process. You can get your groceries here for at home or take place on one of the terraces to taste all kinds of different foods in one of the most beautiful parks of Amsterdam. Enjoy the live music or take a ride in the carousel. From March to November, the Pure Market travels through the country almost every Sunday. Every 2nd Sunday of the month the Pure Markt is in the Amstelpark. Every last Sunday of the month in Park Frankendael but also in the Amsterdamse Bos and Abcoude. 9-13 May – Rollende Keukens
From 9-13 May it’s the time for de Rollende Keukens again. Every year, many mobile kitchens and food trucks gather at the Westergasfabriek, to create an great open air culinary event! There is something for everyone on the menu; vegan, vegetarian, meat, fish, you can find it all. The evening is complete with live music and open-air dining.
The food trucks will be open from 1pm until 11 pm. Just have a wander on the Westergasterrein and find things like Dutch poffertjes, Dim Sum, sushi, French crepes, Mexican burritos, hotdogs, ice cream, Pad Thai, Belgian waffles and much more!
12-13 May – 24h Oost
24H Oost is an event which invistes you to discover the neighbourhood Amsterdam Oost. All kinds of facilities, museums, restaurants open their doors with special talks, performances, tours, workshops, special events and much more. This year’s edition takes place on 12 May 2018. 12 May – National Windmill day
One thing the Netherlands is famous for is the iconic windmill. Each year on the second Saturday of May we celebrate National Windmill day. On this day you can visit 950 windmills and watermills. A lot of the windmills open their doors and organize demonstrations on the process of how the windmills work. Some windmills even have concerts on this special day. Molen van Sloten is the only operating windmills in Amsterdam that is open this day. Check out more on their website.
Untill 27 May 2018- Dutch Masters from the Hermitage
For the first time in its existence, the Hermitage Amsterdam has brought many Dutch Masters from the famous collection in St. Petersburg to the Netherlands. Travel back in time to the Netherlands’ Golden Age, and encounter an impressive array of the works that influenced – and continue to influence – artistic styles across a range of styles.8 March – 3 June – High Society
Currently on display at the Rijksmuseum: ‘High Society’. This exhibition shows four centuries of international fashion among powerful monarchs, eccentric aristocrats and wealthy citizens who had themselves painted by the great masters such as Velázquez, Cranach, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Veronese, Munch, Sargent and Manet. You can see thirty-five life-size portraits from museums or private collections in LA, Florence, Paris, London and Vienna. Book your ticket in advance and skip the line.
