You’re super excited, you have booked your flight and accommodation and now it’s time to make a list of what you want to do and see in Amsterdam. A lot of things cost money but their is also plenty of free fun! Below are 10X things you can do in Amsterdam without spending a dime!

Begijnhof

The Begijnhof in Amsterdam is one of the most characteristic parts of the old city. This courtyard with historical alsmhouses is a place of peace and quiet in a busy city. The courtyard was once the site of a group of religious women who all had taken a vow of chastity.

Free Lunch Concert

Every Wednesdays at 12:30 there are free lunch concerts happening at Het Concertgebouw. It takes place in the Grote or the Kleine zaal. When the lunch concert is taking place in the Kleine zaal it is possible to pick up a ticket from 11:30 on the day itself. For the Grote Zaal no ticket is needed.

The Albert Cuyp Market

The largest market in Europe with 260 stalls makes for a perfect day out. You can find fruits and vegetables, clothing, leather and other fine goods. But also real Dutch products such as herring, stroopwafels and drop.

Parks and Gardens

Amsterdam has a lot of parks and gardens which can be visited for free. The most famous park het Vondelpark is great for a nice barbecue or a picknick with friends. Up for a workout or a nice walk then also try the Rembrandtpark, Westerpark or Flevopark.

De Waag

De Waag was once the head office of the powerful trade organizations in the city. Nowadays there is a grand café and bar located in this historical building on the Nieuwmarkt. Definitely worth taking a walk for.

Free Walking Tour

Every day at 10:3,0 13:30 and 16:00 there are free walking tours starting on Dam Square. Just find the tour guide at the national monument and enjoy the 2-hour walking tour showing you the highlights of Amsterdam.

Flowermarket

The most famous flower market in the world is located inside floating barges. Enjoy the smell of fresh flowers and while you’re at it buy some bulbs to take home. Open Mon – Sat from 09:00 – 17:30 and on Sunday from 11:00 – 17:30.

Waterlooplein – Flea market

Ready to do some shopping but don’t feel like paying the full price? Take a trip to the Waterlooplein where you can buy clothing, antiques and much more. Also a great area to wander around and get to know a bit more about the history of Amsterdam.

Negen Straatjes

Wander through the nine little streets located between the Leidsegracht and Raadhuisstraat and find one of a kind shops. You will find the cutest boutiques, vintage finds but also Dutch designer shops.

Chinese Tempel

The Chinese Tempel Fo Guang Shan He Hua Tempel is located on the Zeedijk since 2000. It is the largest religious building in Chinese style built in Europe. The Chinese tempel can be visited Tuesday to Saturday from 12.00-17.00 and Sunday from 10.00-17.00.
