Exhibtion: Royal Bags at Museum of Bags and Purses Amsterdam
Admire bags of no less than Grace Kelly, Empress Sissi, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Juliana. Since October 8th the Museum of Bags and Purses (Tassenmuseum Hendrikje) has a new exhibition featuring Royal Bags.
Visiting the exhibition will not only present you with bags that would fill up your dream walk-in-closet, it also gives you a sneak peak into the lives of these royal ladies. Topics such as fashion, etiquette, travel and the use of the royal purse in function are used in the exhibition. Especially for this exhibition, Queen Máxima has selected three bags from the collection of former Queen Juliana.
For a large part of history, kings and queens were the real trendsetters and they had a great influence on the world. Traditionally, a Queen influenced what was worn at court. Noble ladies followed this fashion image and slowly the trend spread through all layers of the population. There were all sorts of rules, which items had to be worn at certain times. For every occasion there was a separate outfit with a matching bag. It were the bags that were popular among the population.
The Royal Bags exhibtion is the closing of a festive year for Museum of Bags and Purses. The museum is celebrating it’s twentieth anniversary this year and therefore exhibits the most famous bags of European kings and queens. It all started with the private collection of Hendrikje and Heinz Ivo. The collection includes over 5,000 bags, from historical documents to the timeless classics of modern design by famous fashion houses such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermès.
