Amsterdam Welcome visits The Art of Banksy
Last week, Amsterdam Welcome paid a visit to the Beurs van Berlage where the Art of Banksy exhibition is currently on display. Steve Lazarides, former agent and friend of Banksy collected a substantial amount of iconic artworks by Banksy which are presented in this exhibition.
Who was Banksy?
Nobody knows who is Banksy, yet everybody knows who he is. Some consider him a prankster whereas others, an artistic genius. – Yalçin Balci
In the early days Banksy created art with graffiti on the streets. His work soon got the attention of the media and the interest for his artworks has only increased since. The artworks are striking and humorous images sometimes combined with provoking slogans. The intention of Banksy is to put you to thinking about worldwide matters.
The British artist was selected in 2010 by Time magazine for the list of the world’s most influential people. This list also includes Barack Obama, Steve Jobs and Lady Gaga, to say it’s an honour is an understatement.
Banksy is probably the most famous yet mysterious artist the world has (n)ever seen… There has been a lot of speculation but his true identity is still unknown and has never been confirmed.
Walking through London
Going through the exhibition feels like you’re in London, even just for a second… The artworks are spread out over many small rooms which keeps you surprised at every corner. A little bit over 85 artworks of Banksy tell the story of this controversial artist. A large number of the artworks have never been shown before in Europe. His works are humorous but also provocative by expressing his criticism on politics. An example of his work is Jesus on the cross with shopping bags in both hands making his criticism on consumerism known.
You can visit the art of Banksy till the 7th of January (extended). The exhibition can be visited between 11:00 – 19:00 every day and on Friday till 21:00.
Tickets are available online (€17,50) or at the door (€19,50).
