The Little Art Deco Movie Theatre

The Movies is the oldest movie theatre in Amsterdam that is still in use. You will find it at the Haarlemmerdijk, one of the numerous shopping streets in this city. The Movies was founded in 1912 under the name of Bioscoop Tavenu and was changed to Cinema Hollandia two years later. In 1971, the theatre was sold and the name was changed to ‘The Movies’. In addition, instead of screening mostly action movies, the new owner chose to screen films that were a little bit higher in quality.

Besides that The Movies shows really interesting films, the building is very nice-looking. The interior is still completely original, therefore when entering the theatre you feel as though you enter the art deco era. When you are looking for ‘dinner and a movie’ do not look any further because The Movies also contains a restaurant and a bar. Everything you need for a cultural evening!

Another lovely art deco movie theatre is Pathé Tuschinski, they offer all the large block busters. And for a coffee before the film you can simply cross the street to Two For Joy.
